Haberly IT is my intention to present some nuts-and-bolts advice about the role graduate departments can and should play in helping their students find teaching positions. I should, however, clarify two points. First, I in no way claim to have discovered any magic keys to successful employment; many of my suggestions are already standard practice in a number of graduate departments, and many can be found in the MLA’s Guide for Job Candidates and Department Chairmen. In fact, everything I am going to say is really no more than common sense.
My experience over the last four years, however, suggests that far too many departments are still failing to give their students the basic tools and training needed to find jobs. Secondly, much of this paper deals with finding jobs for Ph. Nonetheless, I believe that many of my suggestions can be of use to other languages, and to departments granting the M. I do not intend to be unnecessarily cruel, but about ten to twenty percent of the job applications I see come from people who are simply not viable candidates in today’s market: five-and six-year ABD’s, holders of non-Ph.
We at Virginia, like all other departments today, can afford the luxury of hiring only those with the Ph. These odds are not as favorable as one might like, but they can be compared to the odds for high school seniors trying to get into first-rate private colleges, for example, and are far better than the odds for admission to medical school. The situation is manageable rather than hopeless, and we cannot afford simply to throw up our hands and moan in despair. The ratio of candidates to jobs, in fact, is low enough to enable us to do a great deal to shift the odds significantly for our qualified new Ph.
First, we must help our graduate students to look honestly at themselves and their abilities, and help them to learn everything possible about the jobs that are available, so that they can zero in on those few jobs they really have a chance of winning. And, as we work to match student to job, we must also realize, and help our students realize, that they are products in a buyer’s market and that there are certain simple techniques of packaging and salesmanship that can make the student-product a great deal more attractive to prospective employers.
